The work of Dr. Ross Dunseath: Duke University, Monroe Institute
W. J. Ross Dunseath, Ph.D., is an electrical engineer whose journey into the intriguing field of Parapsychology (PSI) research began during his studies at Duke University in the previous century. His career includes developing dry electrode biosensors in a biofeedback lab at Duke and inventing instrumentation for combined EEG/fMRI neuroimaging in a startup venture. He is currently a part of the Westfall Neuroimaging Lab at the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia and serves as the research coordinator at The Monroe Institute. His current research interests focus on neuroimaging of altered states of consciousness and psi phenomena, as well as exploring psi sensors and biofield measurement.
I am featured in a short documentary that highlights research completed at the University of Virginia, The Monroe Institute, and the Rhine Research Center, and offers a science-focused look at how my brain functions differently. Watch the film, then explore more on the research, the path that brought me here, and ways this work might inform your own exploration.

Controlled Chamber Session: Bioelectric Signal Testing
This video captures one of many research sessions conducted at the University of Virginia (UVA) DOPS Laboratory, where I am being connected to a computer within the Faraday cage. These sessions are part of ongoing efforts to explore how my brain engages with multiple levels of consciousness simultaneously. The goal of this research is to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms through which my focus can initiate healing processes in others.
Measuring the voltage from Edd’s hands: 5000 Volts!
In this video, we’re engaged in a series of experimental procedures designed to evaluate and identify the most effective instrumentation capabilities for detecting and quantifying the bio-electric field energy radiating from the tips of my fingers. This series of tests is part of a broader effort to better understand the properties and mechanisms of biofield phenomena, utilizing advanced measurement technologies to capture subtle electrical signals that may underlie energetic interactions.
CASE STUDY: Energy Body Research at The Monroe Institute
Fig. 4: E-field response during Edd Edwards energy session. Yellow line marks lowest field level. Difference from low point to peak is 0.86 volts. Blue line marks point the Edd stopped. Time is 10 seconds per grid line.
Quasi-static Electric Fields of the Human Body: Copper Wall Research at the Monroe Institute
Case 3 (Fig. 4) appears to be an example of “distant mental intention on a living system” (DMILS), or perhaps a direct energy transference of some sort. The participant was standing with eyes closed, and the electric field showed a stable DC baseline for several minutes, when it suddenly started rising, accelerating to a peak. During this time Edd Edwards was standing about 20 feet away from the CWR, “sending energy” to the participant. After the peak, the amplitude reduced about 50%, and leveled out for about 50 seconds. It then suddenly started dropping again at the point marked by the blue line, which also corresponds to the time Edd stopped sending energy. After about 25 seconds the amplitude again levels off, for about 40 seconds, and then rises until the end of the session. The participant reported feeling like a capacitor being charged and then discharged, with an overall sense of feeling energized. In the solo part of the session before Edd arrived, the electric field was stable with possibly some small excursions, but nothing like the big move that appeared later during the Edd session. It was quite the experience to see the field level drop off the second Edd stopped his energy intention, and we intend to explore DMILS effects in future work with Edd and Monroe participants.
The Monroe Institute is expanding research into unusual human capacities that appear to generate and modulate large electrical fields around the body. These signals are distinct from ordinary static charge produced by friction and are difficult to measure, yet under controlled conditions they are detectable in some individuals. Early work at the Menninger Institute’s Copper Wall program demonstrated large voltage pulses from healers and meditators, and we have observed comparably high body voltages in select cases at the Monroe Institute..
TMI is installing a Copper Wall array modeled on the Menninger protocol to study body electrical fields in talented participants. Edd Edwards is an exemplary subject for these studies, having repeatedly produced anomalous instrument responses consistent with substantial body voltages and with effects that many observers report as perceptible and often therapeutic. With steady enrollment of consciousness explorers at TMI’s residential programs, the new instrumentation will allow systematic measurement of body-voltage distribution across this population.
Summary
These findings raise important questions. There is currently no accepted physiological mechanism for generation of large, transient body voltages on the order of tens of volts. Focused application of these fields has been associated with beneficial outcomes such as pain reduction and subjective healing. In some instances the effects appear to occur across distances or with shielding that would rule out a simple electric-field carrier, suggesting the possibility of an additional, as-yet-uncharacterized process. Measuring anomalous body electric activity is the crucial first step toward clarifying mechanisms and clinical relevance, and further rigorous study is a high priority.

Rhine Research Center: Bio Photon Lab
In 2008 I began working with the Rhine Research Center, an institution with a long history of laboratory research on ESP. In recent years the Rhine has developed a community of energy healers and initiated controlled studies examining biophotons and psychokinetic (PK) phenomena in select practitioners. The lab is asking practical questions: are healing effects mediated by biophotons, can healers demonstrate PK under controlled conditions, and how are healing, PK, and biophoton emissions related?
John G. Kruth, Executive Director of the Rhine and founder of the Rhine Education Center, summarizes current projects and methods. John has studied parapsychology for more than 35 years and has been an active member of the Rhine Research Team since 2009; his research focuses on healing methods, intentional and unintentional PK, psi effects on the body and environment, and qualitative methods for understanding psi experiences.
Subtle Energies and Biophotons
Kruth has continued the work of Bill Joines and Steve Baumann, who founded the Bioenergy Laboratory at the Rhine Research Center in the early 2000s.1 The laboratory’s purpose is to detect electromagnetic radiation from humans during times of focused intent, for example, during deep meditation or energy healing. Sensitive infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) light detection equipment measures invisible light emissions from gifted individuals who volunteer to participate.
Over the lifetime of the laboratory over a hundred individuals – including self-proclaimed energy healers, meditators, martial artists, and others who claim no special ability – were measured for their ability to emit biophotons (low level ultraviolet light emissions from biological organisms including humans). These experiments occur in complete darkness in an electromagnetically shielded room.
Kruth and his colleagues found that four individuals and three meditation groups could achieve biophoton counts up to a million a second, where control readings typically give less than ten counts a second. These huge deviations began when the individuals focused on their respective disciplines and subsided when the activity ceased.
The research has continued to flourish, with several other high-profile healers, including well-known energy practitioner Edd Edwards, achieving extraordinarily high biophoton counts. These persist despite the careful measures taken to eliminate potential confounds. Lately, Kruth has found high biophoton counts even when the sensor is capped, suggesting that some effects might be due to psychokinesis on the general operation of the detector rather than the production of biophotons.
Study on Healer Edd Edwards at the Rhine Research Center, August 2019
Edd Edwards, a well-known healer with on-call psychokinetic abilities, used hands-on healing in the Rhine Bioenergy Lab while working on study author Judith Pennington. This preliminary study awaits biophoton measurements taken by Executive Director John Kruth with a photomultiplier tube. During a 10-minute session which healed chronic low back pain in the recipient, Edwards produced near-coherent and highly coherent brainwaves across all frequencies, including low, mid and upper gamma.
He transmitted high-frequency gamma to the recipient, whose low gamma grew more coherent. Eyes-open measurements showed unprecedentedly high-value Awakened Mind, Evolved Mind, and Gamma Synchrony values. Unusual brainwave patterns consisting of cross-currents and stable variability, also noted in a high-density EEG study at the Division of Perceptual Studies, were also seen on the Mind Mirror 6.
Resonant Energy Transfers on a Quantum Level
As shown on The History Channel’s October “Alien Brain” program, part of which was filmed at Rhine, Edd has psychokinesis abilities that he demonstrates at will, much like a master magician—only his skills are real. On the program, he infused two steel rods with electromagnetic energy that moved a horizontal lever on a Charged Density Pulse (CDP) device from left to right and back again on cue. On the episode, he set down the steel rods and moved the lever, again on cue, with electrical current transmitted from his fingertips.
RESEARCH PAPER: Exploring the Frontiers of Consciousness
Why does one person struggle to quiet the mind and another dive into the silence of meditation with ease? How do a person’s thoughts and feelings affect their own brainwaves and entrain the brainwave patterns of others?
What will help the meditator rise into the gamma frequencies of superconscious awareness and mystical union? And how does that superconscious meditator healthfully process high-frequency gamma in the body?
Those are just a few of many questions which have fascinated Judith for the past four decades. Her personal experiences, apprenticeship with Awakened Mind pioneer Anna Wise, and her subsequent development of the Vilistus Mind Mirror 6 (above, at left) have enabled her to find many of these answers.
Judith’s quest for understanding leads her to map the brainwaves of extraordinary people all over the world and to write about them in internationally published articles and her books, all of which are geared to the science of meditation and spirituality.

Scientific investigation of my reported abilities began in 1994
The energy I generate has been described using various terms—psychokinesis, biophotons, biofield therapy, bioenergy, scalar energy, “super-potential scalar energy,” and Bio‑Intrinsic Resonant Energy (©B.I.R.E.)—and has been characterized as a measurable bioelectrical phenomenon. Dr. Dunseath (University of Virginia) has proposed that this energy results from the coordinated engagement of multiple levels of consciousness, and biophysicist W. C. Levengood has concluded that I have trained aspects of my autonomic nervous system to interact with a resonant energy field present in living organisms.
From 1994 to 2008, this work was conducted at the Pinelandia Biophysical Laboratory under the direction of Dr. W. C. Levengood and Dr. John Gedye.
